Golden Globe Race 2022

Dåså har det gått en månad sen starten och det är bara 7-8 månader kvar...

Om inget oförutsett händer bör Simon Curwen passera ekvatorn som första båt om 30-40 timmar. Bakom honom är det tajt mellan Kirsten, Tapio och Pat L men ingen av dom hotar Curwen än så länge. Curwen och Kirsten går sydväst i jakten på bästa vindar medan Tapio och Pat L riskerar att snart köra fast i ett vindhål. Noterbart är att Damien Guillou plockar båt efter båt och tagit sig upp till sjätteplatsen.

Simon Curwen går snabbare än jag trodde och passerade ekvatorn vid 20-tiden. Samtliga i den jagande trion förlorar distans mot Curwen som har drygt 1200 sjömil kvar till märket.

Abhilash, Kirsten och Tapio har passerat ekvatorn i nämnd ordning. Lawless stog på öronen häromdan och slog sig ordentligt men kämpar på och bör klippa ekvatorn om ett par timmar.

Nu börjar det visa sig vilka som har dålig bottenfärg...

During a calm he decided to dive on the hull to check the coppercoat antifouling only to discover with horror that 70% of his hull was covered with gooseneck barnacles!"

"I checked the hull in Spain arriving from South Africa, and again in Les Sables d’Olonne before the start, and all was fine. Two days after the Lanzarote film drop I dove in again and had seen nothing. Yesterday, just two weeks later I was shocked to discover 2 cm long barnacles colonising the hull. Fortunately I’ve been able to get rid of them all."

"So far only Jeremy has seen the dreaded barnacles, but other unsuspecting sailors may be impacted. The calms of the doldrums are the last place they can swim and check their hull before venturing in the southern hemisphere trade winds. Let’s hope they will!"

"This is obviously a staunch reminder of Tapio Lehtinen’s (FIN) ordeal in the 2018 who discovered in the Indian Ocean that his Asteria was covered with Barnacles. He refused to dive for fear of sharks and was not allowed to scrape his hull in Australian territorial waters. He completed his round the world tour in 322 days, being last to finish, and earning the nickname of ‘Captain Barnacles‘."

Det av mig fetade stämmer inte, Tapio badade ett par gånger för att skrapa skrovet i förra racet men tog sig upp i båten fortare än kvickt när nyfikna och hungriga hajar dök upp för att få sig ett skrovmål.

Tomy som går längst österut i den jagande fyrklövern har haft ett par bra dygn och gått upp till andraplatsen medan Kirsten som går längst västerut tappar.

Curwen runt 550 kvar till märket.

Ytterligre en med beväxning... Guy Waites tog ett dopp och konstaterade beväxning som han nu borstat/skrapat bort, inga hajar dök upp... Det finns ett 50-tal hajarter i Atlanten, dom man inte vill stifta närmare bekanskap med är främst vitfenad oceanhaj, tjurhaj, tigerhaj, hammarhaj och vithaj. Risken är dock minimal då så gott som alla hajattacker sker i kustnära vatten. Hittills i år har hajarna tagit 8 liv och ytterligare ett 70-tal har blivit bitna men kommit undan med blotta förskräckelsen...

Tio båtar har passerat ekvatorn.
Tomy gav upp sin ostliga bana och ligger nu sydsydväst om Tapio och Lawless. Kirsten ligger kvar längst västerut och hoppas på lite extra fart med hjälp av Brasilianska strömmen men hon tappar stadigt mot Tomy/Tapio/Lawless.

Curwen har ca 270 sjömil kvar till märket men har fått problem...

Curwen framme vid Trindade om ett par timmar. Tanken är att lägga sig i lä och klättra upp i masten med ett nytt genuafall. Han bör inte förlora mer än nån timme eller två. Inte för att jag vill hälla smolk i Curwens glädjebägare men han är drygt 300 sjömil efter Moitessiers position 1968. Kirsten på sin västliga rutt tappade ytterligare senaste dygnet.

Stämmer prognosen för de närmsta dygnen kommer tätgänget gissningsvis inte att slå österut efter passagen av Trindade utan fortsätta söderut en bit till i hopp om ett senare lyft med undanvind mot Kapstaden.

En del har kanske sett filmen The Mercy om skojaren Donald Crowhurst på tv men jag tror inte att Deep Water har visats.

Sju av tretton båtar har nu passerat Trindade och samtliga forsätter nästan rakt söderut i stället för att gå mot Kapstaden. Som prognosen ser ut tror jag täten fortsätter ända ner till 38-40 grader syd för att få lyftet mot Kapstaden på 34 grader syd. Samtidigt gäller det att hålla ögonen på ett lågtryck från sydväst som man inte vill hamna i.

Tapios ledning är mest en chimär eftersom han ligger längst österut av tätbåtarna och då har kortaste distansen kvar till slutmålet. DTF blir intressant först när båtarna rundar Sydafrika och passerar Cape Agulhas. Curwen redan fått undanvind och Tapio kan knappast ligga kvar på nuvarande kurs så länge till. I brist på annat i det här sirapsracet kan man väl sticka ut hakan och gissa på att ordningen vid gaten utanför Kapstaden blir Curwen, Guillou och Tapio... förutsatt att prylarna håller.

Spännande utveckling av vägvalet mot Kapstaden. Curwen och Tapio gick nordost medan Kirsten och Lawless gick sydost. Kirsten är i sina hemmavatten och är den enda som gått ner förbi 38 grader syd, klarar hon vindhålet får hon lyftet upp mot Kapstaden. Curwen och Tapio å andra sidan riskerar att möta "doktorn" med grov motsjö. Inte omöjligt att Kirsten rundar märket först.

Guy Waites gav upp härom dan och går av någon outgrundlig anledning mot Punta del Este i Uruguay dit han har runt 1400 sjömil. Han kanske har en gammal flamma där för hade det bara gällt att slipdra eller lyfta båten för rengöring har han bara ca 840 till Rio.

Tack för intressanta uppdateringar, det uppskattas!

Jag hade inte heller hoppat i sjön utanför Sydafrika eller Australien med tanke på hajarna. Men man bör kanske inte vara så rädd för dom, pratade en gång med en australiensisk yrkesdykare om han någonsin hade sett en haj och det hade han inte. Men att dom sett honom tvivlade han inte på.
