Walking through Russia took Bushby 11 years not because of the distance, but because of rigid visa restrictions and severe Arctic weather:

## 2. Where He Actually Was During COVID-19
Bushby finally walked out of Russia and entered Mongolia in 2017. From there, he trekked through China and into Central Asia. [1, 2]
By late 2019, he had reached the border of Turkmenistan and Iran. It was at this exact moment—while he was trying to secure a visa to walk through Iran—that the COVID-19 pandemic struck and completely shut down international borders. [1, 2]
## 3. The Modern Aftermath
Because he was barred from advancing into Iran and could not backtrack into Russia due to the geopolitical fallout of the war in Ukraine, Bushby found himself entirely trapped in Central Asia. [9, 10]
To keep his rule of "never using motorized transport to advance," he spent years waiting out the pandemic in Mexico. Then, he bypassed the closed land borders by swimming 179 miles across the Caspian Sea. He crossed into Europe via Turkey, and is currently on the final stretch of his 28-year trek back to England.
