Dr. Oz: This 'Unfortunate Necesssity' Is Going To Crack Down On Medical Fraud Across The U.S. - Pressträff
CMS announces pause on new durable medical equipment suppliers
“The amount of fraud is so massive that it’s easier to open one of these suppliers than to open a bank account,” said Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz

The decision to enact a moratorium came after an analysis of current and historic Medicare enrollment and claims data, according to a Federal Register notice. The affected companies — suppliers who provide durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies — make up just a miniscule portion of the agency’s $1.7 trillion budget, but the industry has recurring issues with fraud. In the past, federal investigations have found that Medicare improperly paid $34 million between 2015 and 2017, and $22.7 million between 2018 and 2024 to suppliers.
I synnerhet Minnesota.
Inside HHS’ anti-fraud efforts: An aggressive crackdown sweeps up mainly Democratic-led states
Fraud investigations escalate
Administrations have routinely targeted health care fraud as a problem in the U.S. A semi-annual report from the HHS Office of Inspector General released in the spring of 2025 but produced during the Biden administration claimed to have identified billions in fraud. Biden administration officials also investigated some Minnesota programs for fraud, including the state’s use of pandemic relief funds.
But Oz promised to crack down even harder last March when he was confirmed to lead CMS, and in the last month, his focus has intensified. Nowhere does it appear more present than in Minnesota, where around the same time federal immigration agents have also launched a massive enforcement operation, dubbed Operation Metro Surge, focused on the Twin Cities.
As law enforcement descended on the state in December, YouTuber Nick Shirley, who describes himself as an independent journalist, posted a video in which he claimed he had discovered widespread fraud at child care centers in Minnesota, many run by members of the state’s sizable Somali immigrant population. The video caught the attention of HHS, and soon deputy health secretary Jim O’Neill froze all child care funding to the state and demanded answers from local officials. That freeze has been temporarily blocked by a judge.
(paywall remover, option 3.)
