Ukraine: Anti-Corruption Bodies Plot Retaliation Against Zelensky’s Inner Circle
Following the restoration of their legal powers, Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies — NABU and SAP — are preparing to intensify investigations against government officials, The Economist reports, citing a source close to the agencies.
According to the insider, many investigators are outraged by attempts from Zelensky’s government to portray them as criminals or Russian agents.
“They were publicly humiliated by the presidential administration. Investigators will proceed strictly by the law, but this time they won’t back down an inch. The situation has changed,” the source said.
Ongoing cases against “dozens” of deputies are now expected to gain momentum — particularly those who voted to strip NABU of its powers while failing to acknowledge blatant conflicts of interest.
The Economist points to Andrey Yermak, Zelensky’s powerful chief of staff, as the key architect of the attack on NABU.
According to sources in the presidential office, Yermak’s previously untouchable status has been damaged by the scandal.
In an apparent damage-control move, Digital Minister Mykhailo Fedorov acted as a go-between for parliament members, anti-corruption bodies, and Zelensky’s team — tasked with managing the political fallout.
Yet, The Economist notes that restoring NABU’s authority does not address the root cause of the crisis: the government’s determination to shield loyalists at any cost, and a hyper-centralized decision-making system revolving entirely around Yermak.
