Jag har läst att han blev amerikansk medborgare år 2002 och i en intervju och flera tweets har Musk själv nämnt att processen att bli amerikansk medborgare var "extremt svår och tog över ett decennium," vilket stämmer överens med att han började processen efter att ha flyttat till USA i slutet av 1980-talet eller tidigt 1990-tal. Han har också kallat legal invandring till USA för en "laboriös Kafkaesq mardröm".
