Generals are being prepared for criminal cases for the failure of the defense of the Kursk region
The “cleansing” of the Russian Ministry of Defense that began after the dismissal of Sergei Shoigu may continue with a new series of arrests of high-ranking security officials who failed to defend the Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops have been in charge for over a week.
The events near Kursk, where Moscow lost control over a territory of 1,000 square kilometers and 82 settlements, may result in criminal cases against representatives of the military and security authorities, Verstka reports, citing sources in the government and parliament. The prosecution may also affect civilian officials who allowed this situation to happen, the publication's sources said.
The invasion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces — the largest since the beginning of the war against Ukraine — has already put Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, who has led the Russian group in Ukraine since January 2023, out of favor with President Vladimir Putin. According to Bloomberg, Gerasimov knew about Kyiv’s plans, but did not inform Putin. What happened could have a negative impact on Gerasimov’s career, a source for The Moscow Times previously warned.
Since the beginning of May, at least five generals have been arrested in the Ministry of Defense, each of whom has been charged with corruption. Among them are the head of the Main Directorate of Personnel, Lieutenant General Yuri Kuznetsov, deputy head of the Main Directorate of Innovative Development, Major General Vladimir Shesterov, former commander of the 58th Army, Major General Ivan Popov, head of the Main Directorate of Communications (GUS) of the Armed Forces of Russia, Lieutenant General Vadim Shamarin, and the head of the Main Directorate of Personnel of the Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant General Yuri Kuznetsov. In April, Shoigu's key deputy Timur Ivanov was detained and arrested in connection with the billion-dollar bribe case.
