Mickelson had been one of the few supporters of the Saudi Golf League, a start-up league threatening to pull top PGA Tour golfers away for high paychecks to form a super league. In an interview with Shipnuck, Mickelson said they were "scary motherf—ers to get involved with."

He added "they killed [Washington Post reporter and U.S. resident Jamal] Khashoggi" and listed off concerns with their human rights track record before noting that he would consider joining the league because he viewed it as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates."

Mickelson proceeded to call the PGA Tour a "dictatorship" and said the concerns for players at the top are different from those on the bottom of the "money list."

"They use the top guys to make their own situation better, but the top guys don’t have a say,"

He later apologized, saying he believed the records were "off-record" and "out of context and without my consent."

Since making those comments, Mickelson has lost several major sponsors, including Callaway Golf, Workday, KPMG and Amstel Light. He also is no longer able to host The American Express tour event in La Quinta, California.

According to the Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner, Mickelson was not disinvited from the Masters, but instead told the tournament's chairman that he was not going to play.

This weekend Norman has brought LIV Golf to The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, and Australian sports fans, as ever, appear powerless against his siren song. Famous players are close enough to touch, striding about with chiselled calves, trailed by caddies in tight, tucked-in kit. At the driving ranges and putting greens, fans crane three-deep to see local favourite Cameron Smith along with famous one-name Americans and Brits: Brooks, Bryson, DJ, Phil, Lee, Case, Poults. Richard Bland? Not so much. But on Friday he shot six-under 66. Even a 50-year-old world No 114 can shoot lights out.

In the Grange’s $1200-a-head Cellar Door marquee where Norman makes an appearance with Malinauskas and former Treasurer and US Ambassador Joe Hockey to remind us “golf is a force for good” and that LIV Golf Adelaide is the greatest party the city has ever seen, fans seem to agree.
