On the afternoon of January 5, I received a call from the President in connection with a rally by his supporters that day at Freedom Plaza. The President asked if I was watching the event on television. I replied that I had seen coverage of the event. He then commented that “they” were going to need 10,000 troops the following day. The call lasted fewer than thirty seconds and I did not respond substantively, and there was no elaboration.Donald Trump kan inte bestämma över andra delstaters nationalgard. Om det fanns 20,000 trupper redo så skulle det finnas ett godkännande från en hel del guvernörer. Det gör det inte.

The lapse in security at the Capitol Hill was clear on January 6 when thousands of Pro-Trump protesters broke into the building. At first glance, it seemed, Capitol Police were to be blamed. They did not have enough officers to hold down the building and according to Pentagon officials, they did not request for National Guard. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund was blamed and he resigned on January 7.https://www.ibtimes.sg/bad-optics-pentagon-denied-request-national-guard-six-times-says-outgoing-capitol-police-chief-54825
On Monday (January 11), however, he broke his silence and said he had asked House and Senate security officials for National Guard. Police intelligence informed him before the protest that the crowd would be much larger than previous demonstrations. But, the officials including House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving were afraid of the "optics" of deploying the National Guard at the Capitol.

"The acting secretary and the president have spoken multiple times this week about the request for National Guard personnel in D.C.," said Kash Patel, Miller's chief of staff. "We don't do domestic [intelligence] collection," Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said. "We rely on Capitol Police and federal law enforcement to provide an assessment of the situation. And based on that assessment that they had, they believed they had sufficient personnel and did not make a request."

“Chief Sund, his voice cracking with emotion, indicated that there was a dire emergency on Capitol Hill and requested the immediate assistance of as many Guardsmen as I could muster,” Walker said.Vet du vilka som styr över Washington DC:s nationalgard? Jag tror inte att du vet.
Walker said he then alerted Army leadership and sought the eventual approval from then-acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller and then-Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy. But the approval didn’t come until 5:08 p.m. — more than three hours later, Walker said. The troops arrived at the Capitol at 5:20 p.m.
