Americans born in the 1980s and 1990s (commonly known as Millennials and iGen) were more likely to report having no sexual partners as adults compared to GenX’ers born in the 1960s and 1970s in the General Social Survey, a nationally representative sample of American adults (N = 26,707). Among those aged 20–24, more than twice as many Millennials born in the 1990s (15 %) had no sexual partners since age 18 compared to GenX’ers born in the 1960s (6 %).

The shift toward higher rates of sexual inactivity among Millennials and iGen’ers was more pronounced among women and absent among Black Americans and those with a college education. Contrary to popular media conceptions of a “hookup generation” more likely to engage in frequent casual sex, a higher percentage of Americans in recent cohorts, particularly Millennials and iGen’ers born in the 1990s, had no sexual partners after age 18.

Recent research also shows that, overall, millennials — people born between the early 1980s and 2000 — have fewer sexual partners than baby boomers and those in Generation X, the group immediately preceding them.

Granted, the vast majority of young adults are still having sex, but an increasing number of them appear to be standing on the sidelines.

Delaying sex is not necessarily bad, experts say: Being intentional about when to have sex can lead to stronger relationships in the long run. The trend may also reflect that women feel more empowered to say no, said Stephanie Coontz, director of research at the Council on Contemporary Families.

According to the new report, 15 percent of 20- to 24-year-olds have not had sex since turning 18, up from 6 percent in the early 1990s. And a study published in the same journal last year found that although millennials are more accepting of extramarital sex than earlier generations, they reported fewer sexual partners than any group since the 1960s — an average of eight, compared with 11 for boomers and 10 for Generation X.

According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the portion of high school students who have had sex fell last year to 41 percent from 54 percent in 1991 and about 47 percent in 2013. The portion who reported sleeping with multiple partners also declined, from about 19 percent in 1991 to about 12 percent last year.

less than 7% of 20-somethings have sex 2-5 times per week, according to data from online dating service Match, and 49% of people in their 20s have not had sex at all in the past year.

Even more shocking? The study says one in three 20-somethings have never had sex at all.

Until the 1950s,[2] "premarital sex" referred to sexual relations between two people prior to marrying each other.[3] During that period, it was the norm in Western societies for men and women to marry by the age of 21 or 22, and there was no considerations that one who had sex would not marry.

THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION

Attitudes about sex and sexuality began to change in the 1960’s for a number of reasons. Before we look at the drastic change one should understand what they attitudes were during the 1950’s and earlier.

During this time period attitudes were as follows:

The family was close and family time was important and divorce was not accepted
Males and females dated to select a partner for marriage
Women were expected to remain virgins until marriage
40% of women in Canada were married by the age of 22.
Homosexuality was illegal
The main reasons for these attitudes in the 1950’s and earlier were:

§ The generation was worried about becoming pregnant
§ The generation also feared sexually transmitted diseases and infections
§ This generation also worried that they would be like their parents and follow all of their same patterns

The reason why so many young women abstained from having sex was their fear of becoming pregnant. If women became pregnant before they were married they would be ostracized.

Results of the “Sexual Revolution”:
