Souleyman Daitzik, his wife and their extended family were waiting anxiously in the parking lot of Munich’s Schwabing Hospital on Friday night. It was the fourth hospital they had visited after hearing news of the shooting outside the Olympia shopping mall.
The Daitziks’ teenage daughter and son had gone to the shopping mall earlier in the afternoon, before the shooting started.
They were separated when a man dressed in black opened fire outside a McDonald’s across the street from the mall. In a video that circulated online, the Daitziks’ daughter can be seen wearing a red T-shirt, walking toward the gunman. When he drew his weapon and prepared to shoot, she turned and ran the other way, avoiding his fire.
Her brother was shot, and the family was eagerly awaiting news of his condition.
“I have no information,” Mr. Daitzik said in German. “I don’t even know if my child is alive or dead.”
