Foreign Analyst Places Thailand at High Risk of Terrorist Attacks
UPDATE : 16 November 2010
A foreign risk consultant has ranked Thailand as seventh worst amongst countries facing risks of terrorist attacks, while Somalia tops the list.
Maplecroft, a British risk consultancy firm, ranked Thailand at number seven on a list of countries at risk of terrorist attack.
Topping the list is Somalia, followed by Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Colombia.
In Asia, the Philippines came in number eight, right after Thailand.
Russia was listed number ten.
Maplecroft said that Thailand's ranking is due to the daily unrest in the three southernmost provinces.
As it is a risky area, many foreign embassies have forbidden their citizens from traveling to this part of the country.
Thailand's assessed risk of terrorist attacks actually got worse since the last list was released in February, in which the country was ranked number nine.
At that time, the countries ahead of Thailand on the list included Iran, Nigeria, Spain and Myanmar.
Western countries that have been threatened with terrorist attacks, like the US, came in at number 33, while France is at 44 and the UK at 46.
Germany has the lowest risk, reflected in its rank at 70.
