David Bowies bäste skivor gjorde han när ingen var mogen att höra på dem, men de lät så moderna om man lyssnar på den idag, att det var uppenbart att han var inte bara före sin egen publiks förståelse, han var pionjär under en tid när brittpop och grunge toppade listorna utan ett kommersiellt intresse alls. han bara skapade vad han ville.

Efter sin peak med let's dance albumet så varken ville eller kunde han fortsätta i det spåret. Han ångrade sitt kommersiella spår men hade inte heller sin konstnärliga ådra kvar. Han gjorde ett par rockskivor med sin granne, Tin Machine. Grunge innan grunge uppfanns har han skämtsamt kallat projektet.
Brian Eno , ni vet från Roxy Music och från hereos-Berlinplattorna. När han bjöds in igen så började magi skapas återigen.
