The English flag is the cross of St George. It appears to be the Genoese that associated the red cross on white with St George. They adopted it as their badge. The English adopted a red cross in the 1300s. But it was used alongside the Royal Standard - the three lions.
The English flag is closely related to the flag of Georgia.
Not this one - the US state, named for King George III
but this one - the Country.
The Danneborg is also a Christian cross. It is off-centre, and that form has been copied in different colourways by the various parts of the Danes former empire.
It is older than the English flag, reputedly from 1219 It might be based on the flag of the Hospitalars.
The royal arms of Denmark also feature three lions, in their case blue on gold with red hearts.
The Danish flag was said to have droppedfrom the sky in 1219, close to the city of Tallin, which translates to “City of the Danes” in Estonia, during the Battle of the Lyndanisse. The myth goes, that the Danes were loosing the battle and all hope was lost. Danish King Valdemar Victory prayed to God for a sign of strength and a Way to win the battle. The sky then opened up and falling was a red cloth with a White cross upon it. The King found his last strength after seeing this and he and his army won the battle.
That is the myth, and though it has never been proven that an actual flag dropped from the sky, it’s the one Danes tell when telling the story about the biggest Danish symbol and oldest recognized flag in the world. We have a lot of myths we cling onto, like the myth of the Holger Danske statue sleeping underneath Kronborg Castle, and Will only wake up the moment Denmark is in perill.
However, about the flag, there is also one other story that seems a lot more likely and in this case probably also is connected with the English flag. Some historians think, that Valdemar looked directly into the sun, and when turning his gaze down, he saw a cross upon one of the Estonians uniform, on a red background.
During that time, many country flags and others consisted of a cross on a canvas. Probably the most known being that of the Knight Templars. It was the era of the crusades after all, and both Denmark and England participated in the crusades, though on different grounds. Where England was travelling to Holy land, Denmark focused their efforts in the more immediate territory. Particularly around the Baltic Sea.
So they are not exactly related, but more stemming from the same period where countries were using the same sort of flag. You also see that the rest of the Nordic countries and not just Denmark, still has the same sort of flag, while the English flag is no longer the main flag of the UK.
