Ancient human remains which date back more than 2,000 years have been recovered by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).https://www.belfastlive.co.uk/news/b...-year-28510876
The discovery was made after archaeologists were alerted to human bones on Bellaghy peatland in County Londonderry in October 2023.
It is thought the remains could be those of a teenage boy.
The PSNI said it is a "unique archaeological discovery for Northern Ireland".
It explained that the remains had been carbon dated to "as old as 2,000-2,500 years".
A human body that was uncovered in a bogland near the village of Bellaghy in Co Derry dating back over 2,000 years was so well preserved police considered a criminal investigation.
But when radiocarbon dating carried out by experts at a Queen's University lab in Belfast revealed the remains belonged to that of a teenage boy who died between 2,000 and 2,500 years ago, it became clear a significant archaeological discovery had been made.
Police were first alerted to human bones on the surface of peatland in Bellaghy in October, and initial examinations weren't enough to tell whether the remains were recent or ancient.
