Finns det några nu levande ättlingar till Medici-släkten?

Ja, det finns ättlingar. Jag har träffat en italiensk forskare på en konferens för 25 år sedan som var ättling. Dock var det inte rakt nedstigande led men han hette Medici i efternamn. Det känns lite besynnerligt att lyssna på ett föredrag av en Medici, som att man var med om något historiskt och förflyttad i tiden.

Det är illa när inte de döda anförvanternas ro respekteras.

Why are the descendants of this famous Renaissance dynasty sniping at one another in acid aristocratic jabs? Scientists in Florence are planning to exhume the remains of 49 Medici corpses this month for a wide-ranging forensic study. One branch of the family was invited to take part, but a second branch was not.

"They are doing this without asking permission," said Marchese Giuliano Medici Tornaquinci, an elder of the family clan that now lives in Rome. "If they went into your chapel, into your tomb, and opened your family's graves, how would you feel?"

Unfortunately for Marchese Tornaquinci, a distant relative, Prince Ottaviano de Medici, of a less distant Florentine branch of the family, is already deeply involved with the project and has given his consent.

An indirect descendant of the Medici dynasty has filed a police complaint to block the exhumation of the remains of Princess Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici, whose death in 1743 marked the end of the Grand Ducal line. "It would be a profanity, contrary to common morals and to the devotion to the dead," said the president of the International Association of the Medici, Prince Ottaviano de' Medici di Toscana di Ottajano himself an indirect descendant of the Princess. The remains of Princess Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici, are scheduled to be exhumed next autumn from the Medici crypt in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence.
