Att dom just var sysslingar framgår inte, men det står i Lukas 1:36 att Maria (Jesus mamma) och Elisabet (Johannes döparens mamma) var släktingar.
Bibelns fåordighet jämte de olika släktskapsbegreppens flertydighet lämnar fältet fritt för spekulationer.

Many have speculated over the centuries about the kinship of Mary and Elizabeth. In the Greek in Luke 1:36, Elizabeth is Mary’s “suggenes.” The meaning of that Greek word can be “cousin, kinfolk, relative” or any relationship that implies blood lines. The KJV and the Douay-Rheims Bibles translate the word as “cousin” and the NIV translates it as “relative.” Elizabeth and Mary were relatives/cousins but Elizabeth, who was post-menopausal, was probably more than 30 years older than Mary who was in her teens, so they were likely not first cousins.

The original Greek text does not tell us exactly how they were related, but common tradition has held that because their mothers were related, Jesus and John must have been cousins. After this detail, however, nothing else in our Bible mentions any interactions between the two during their childhoods. Indeed, the description of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist suggests that might have been their first meeting, which could then explain John’s question about Jesus’ true identity (see Luke 7:18-23).
