A woman accused in the attack a year ago on a Crystal Lake teen that was streamed live on Facebook came to court on Thursday prepared to enter a guilty plea, but the judge said he is "not ready for a plea" until at least one of her co-defendants' cases is resolved.

Cook County Judge William H. Hooks said either Jordan Hill, 19, formerly of Carpentersville, or Tesfaye Cooper, 19, a former Hoffman Estates High School student, must resolve their cases before he will accept a plea from Covington. Hooks said Covington had agreed to testify against her co-defendants.

Those cases might not be resolved quickly.

Following what he described as an "issues conference" with prosecutors and defense attorneys for Hill, the judge said, "it appears this case will go for a jury trial in the next two to three months."

Referring to the impact comments about the case from former President Barack Obama and current President Donald Trump might have on prospective jurors, Hooks indicated he would require a jury pool of between 200 and 300 people. Potential jurors would be required to complete a questionnaire agreed upon by prosecutors and defense attorneys to help determine if "they can set the comments aside and give the defendant a fair trial," Hooks said.

Jordan Hill, one of four people charged in the 2017 Facebook Live torture case, rejected a plea deal from Cook County prosecutors Tuesday that would have sent him to prison for eight years.

Under the deal, Hill, 19, was to plead guilty to aggravated kidnapping and a hate crime.

At the conclusion of Tuesday’s brief hearing Judge William Hooks asked Hill, “To be clear, the offer’s rejected?”

“Yes, sir,” Hill replied before being lead out of the courtroom.

Hooks, after a lengthy speech that touched on his family’s history in the Civil Rights movement and the impacts of social media on crime and society, then handed down a three-year prison sentence for Covington.

The judge denied a request to give her full credit for the slate of programs she had completed during nearly 16 months she had spent in jail since her arrest. Had he given her full credit, she would have been released in days.

In November, Covington’s younger sister, Brittany, pleaded guilty to her role in the crime and was sentenced to four years probation.

The two remaining defendants – Jordan Hill and Tesfaye Cooper – have turned down plea deals that would have seen them serve several years in prison, and are awaiting trial.

Brittany Covington was taken into custody last week after software installed on her cellphone detected someone logging into a Facebook app from the device.

She will likely remain locked up at least another month after Cook County Judge William Hooks ordered prosecutors to find out whether Covington or someone else was using Facebook.
