A Jewish college student who reported swastikas on her dorm door drew some of them herself.

Sarah Marshak, a George Washington University freshman, was caught on tape by a hidden video camera in the sixth incident of swastika drawing on her dormitory door.

“I wasn’t looking to create this, sort of, insanity,” Marshak told The Hatchet, where she works as a reporter. “I wasn’t looking to become a media darling. I was just looking for acknowledgment from University that someone drew a swastika on the door.”

Breanne Coventry Snell, 24, of Midlothian, Va., is charged with two counts of giving false information to police and one count of unsworn falsification. Each charge is a class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison.

Earlier this month, Snell reported to police that she had been attacked near the Whittemore Center around 6 p.m. on Oct. 3 after leaving a meeting for Hillel, a Jewish student organization. She told police two men shoved her up against a fence and used a number of anti-Semitic slurs related to Nazism.

“It didn’t happen,” UNH Police Chief Nicholas Halias said yesterday.

Zachary Tennen, Michigan State Jewish Student, Not The Victim Of Hate Crime: Prosecutor, Anti-Defamation League

When Zachary Tennen, a sophomore at Michigan State University, was attacked at a party in August, he claimed it was a hate crime. He said he was asked if he was Jewish by men with shaved heads who punched him, broke his jaw and knocked him unconscious. Tennen and his family said the men stapled his mouth shut, and no one attempted to intervene.

However, when police investigated, they found little to support the charge.

Stuart Dunnings III, Ingham County’s prosecutor, recently echoed that opinion in interviews with reporters.

"There is no indication at all that this was a hate crime... None. Zero," Dunnings told the Lansing Journal. "I think it's a shame when one person makes an allegation, and everyone takes it as the truth and gets up in arms about it."

A family business dispute is said to have driven a Jewish man to make anti-Semitic hate calls to elderly women - including his mother - and paint swastikas on their doors.

Jerome and Jamie Brown Roedel, a Jewish couple, said they returned home in April to find their home burglarized and thoroughly trashed by thieves who left swastikas spray-painted on the walls as a calling card.

Outraged community leaders, police and residents moved quickly to stem what they thought was the start of a hate-crime trend. Within two weeks, an interfaith council to promote unity among ethnic and religious groups was organized.

Police now say the burglary was an elaborate hoax, perpetrated by Jamie Roedel and others in order to collect more than $30,000 from the couple's insurance company.

In May 1995, more than a half-dozen school buses were vandalized and Nazi swastikas spray-painted on walls of the Hillel Jewish Community Day School. It appeared to be a hate crime, but the truth the police unturned was shocking.

A Jewish father and son, Al and Steven Rubin, were convicted of faking the hate crime for profit. Steven Rubin, who worked at the school, steered the repair work to his father's business.
