For years, director Steven Spielberg has been rumored as the one to finally bring Master Chief and the "Halo" universe to the big screen. While there's still no word on a "Halo" movie, how does the small screen sound?

During Microsoft's event announcing the Xbox One, the Redmond, Wash.-based software maker also revealed that Spielberg would be involved in the production of a live-action television series based on the world of "Halo," the Xbox's long-running first-person shooter franchise.

Bonnie Ross, studio head at "Halo" developer 343 Industries, spoke on stage about how the Xbox One's unique multimedia interactivity meshes well with Spielberg's style of storytelling. It was then that Spielberg -- who was also in the introductory video for the event -- echoed Ross' sentiment on the video board.

"For me, the Halo universe is an amazing opportunity to be at that intersection where technology and myth-making meet to create something really groundbreaking," Spielberg said, speaking to the crowd from the screen. Spielberg, who will serve as an executive producer on the project, has an extensive list of producing credits for television that include "The Pacific" and "Animaniacs."

"Until now the TV viewing experience has been a one-way street for the viewer," said Nancy Tellem, Microsoft's entertainment and digital media president. "Now, that's about to change. TV on the Xbox will immerse you, enable you to virtually jump into the action." Microsoft's hiring of Tellem, a former CBS executive, last fall was seen as move toward creating original content.

Spielberg will have his hands full adapting "Halo," a massively successful franchise that has sold over 50 million copies worldwide with a fanbase eager to see the story come alive on the screen. “The possibilities for storylines in the Halo universe are as deep and wide as any other space-faring franchise out there," "Halo" gamer Paul Sposato told Forbes. "While we already have an encyclopedic storehouse of info on Halo, it’s still a big universe in there."

There's still no word on when the show will premiere or how people will be able to watch it apart from through Microsoft's Xbox Live.

Showtime's 'Halo' Series Will Feature Master Chief

Showtime's Halo television series, based on the massively popular video game franchise, is looking for actors to fill out its roster of Space Marines — and one of them will catch diehard fans of the franchise by surprise.

According to casting notices obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, the pay cabler's series will feature a live-action version of John/Master Chief, who is described as a Spartan-like warrior of large build. Fans of the franchise are of course familiar with the role, as Master Chief (aka Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John-117) is the primary protagonist of the Halo games.

Other characters poised to be featured in the series are Dr. Halsey — likely the Dr. Catherine Halsey who appears in 2010's Halo: Reach and 2012's Halo 4 and 2015's Halo 5: Guardians — and Jenny, listed as an Asian woman between the ages of 18-20. There is no major character by the name of Jenny in the games, but Dr. Halsey is a prominent figure in Halo lore.

Dr. Halsey is the creator of the SPARTAN-II program, which produced the elite corps of supersoldiers and their Mjolnir Powered Assault Armor. The casting notice for her character calls for an actress between the ages of 55-65, so it is likely that the series will focus on the later stage of her life when she worked to protect her Spartan creations rather than simply raising them for war.

‘Halo’ Series at Showtime Casts Six, Including Natascha McElhone, Bokeem Woodbine

The premium cabler announced Friday that Natascha McElhone, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, and Kate Kennedy have all joined the series adaptation of the megahit video game. They join previously announced series lead Pablo Schreiber, who will play the Master Chief, and Yerin Ha, who is playing a new character named Kwan Ha.

McElhone will star as two characters: Dr. Catherine Halsey, the creator of the Spartan supersoldiers, and Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history, and potentially the key to the survival of the human race.

Azmi will play Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of the Office of Naval Intelligence.

The series will also introduce three all-new characters to the “Halo” universe. Kalu will play Spartan Vannak-134, a cybernetically augmented supersoldier conscripted at childhood who serves as the defacto deputy to the Master Chief. Culzac will star in the role of Spartan Riz-028. a focused, professional and deadly, cybernetically enhanced killing machine. Kennedy stars as Spartan Kai-125, a courageous, curious, and deadly Spartan supersoldier.

“Halo” will begin production later this year in Budapest and is slated to air in the first quarter of 2021. It was announced back in June that Showtime had ordered a 10-episode series based on the megahit video game after it had been in development at the premium cabler for years, though its order has since been trimmed to nine episodes. Kyle Killen and Steve Kane will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of Amblin Television will also executive produce along with series director Otto Bathurst and Toby Leslie for One Big Picture, Scott Pennington for Chapter Eleven, and Karen Richards.
