Jag fick ett smakprov från den "lingvistiska rekordboken", och inte helt oväntat står det så här om just denna fråga:
Linguistics is the scientific study of language(s). It is perhaps obvious to most people that there is no scientific way of determining what is the most beautiful or expressive language on earth, just as it is impossible to prove that Mozart produced better music than Madonna (or vice versa). Although it is perhaps less obvious to a non-linguist, nor is there any way of determining, say, the oldest or simplest language. Yet, people are clearly fond of making such statements, and even to a linguist, it may be of some interest to know what ordinary mortals have to say on subjects like these.

In a few other categories, I came across too few statements to permit an ordered listing, but here are the languages that were mentioned:
UGLIEST: Finnish, French, Dutch, Swedish, German
MOST EXPRESSIVE: Old Church Slavonic, English, Greek
MOST LOGICAL: Esperanto, German, French
MOST SYSTEMATIC: Sanskrit
MOST ROMANTIC: French, Italian, German, Portuguese
MOST SCENTIFIC: Sanskrit, Korean
Unscientific as these views are (as is, admittedly, my survey of them), there is little doubt that quite a lot of people do hold them. Interestingly, it has been demonstrated that people speaking what is perceived as ‘beautiful’ dialects are also judged more physically attractive. It remains to be shown, though, that speakers of Sanskrit are perceived as older than other people. Thinking about it, they probably are on average, as Sanskrit is not acquired by children as a mother tongue, but rather learnt in a scholastic environment, as it functions as ‘the Latin of India’.
In the above, I am especially pleased to note that some people perceive German as ‘romantic’. I have always thought I was alone in thinking of it as the language of love.
