Här har vi en till lönnfet spion, och knappast särskilt glamorös till utseendet precis. Den brittiska David Shayler.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Shayler

WHAT WE DO
The Security Service is responsible for "protecting the UK against threats to national security from espionage, terrorism and sabotage, from the activities of agents of foreign powers, and from actions intended to overthrow or undermine parliamentary democracy by political, industrial or violent means."
We also provide security advice to a range of organisations in the public and private sectors, and work against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. We have also contributed to the fight against serious crime, though our work in this area is currently suspended.
Our statement of objectives and values explains the Service's responsibilities in more detail, and outlines the civic values that we follow in performing our duties.
As our resources are limited, it is essential that we use them effectively so that we can achieve the greatest impact against the most serious threats. See Major Areas of Work for more details on how we deploy our resources and what we are doing to combat specific threats.
The role of the Security Service is defined by law in the Security Service Act 1989 . See Statutory Basis for more information on what the law says about the Security Service's functions and relationship with the Government.

Our roles and responsibilities
SIS collects secret intelligence and mounts covert operations overseas in support of British Government objectives. The parameters for these activities are laid down in the Intelligence Services Act 1994, which states that SIS functions are to obtain and provide information and perform other tasks relating to the acts and intentions of persons overseas:
- In the interests of national security, with particular reference to the government's defence and foreign policies;
- in the interests of the economic well-being of the UK; and
- in support of the prevention or detection of serious crime
Part of a national and global team
The collection of intelligence by SIS is in accordance with the requirements and priorities established by the Joint Intelligence Committee and approved by British Government Ministers.
SIS uses human and technical sources to meet these requirements, as well as liaison with a wide range of foreign intelligence and security services.
SIS also works closely with the other British intelligence and security agencies (the Security Service and GCHQ), the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defence, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Home Office, HM Revenue and Customs and other UK law enforcement agencies and government departments.
Om vi ska jämföra med Sverige så kan man säga att MI5 är SÄPO och MI6 är MUST (en haltande jämförelse, men...)
