Logic express won't pick up midi interface

So me and a buddy were trying to setup our recording shit but it won't seem to pick up the microphone. it regesters on the sound card and on the computers built in mixer but logic won't seem to pick it up. It regesters that there's a firewire device, gives us the option to create it but then... nothing. no sound it's just fucked... I'm on logic 8 express (old I know) and I'm using my macbook from 2010 with my M-audio 1814 firewire. Please respond soon. Any help muchly appreciated.
