The mirror image of Al-Qaeda

Interview with Doctor Magnus Ranstorp, expert in counter terrorism and Research Director for the Center of Asymmetric Threat Studies at the Swedish National Defense College.
I was at the trial over the last two days. I saw him. There is a broadcast ban on him, which means that only the words are coming out and I think it was a good choice because he was pretty effective in terms of being calm, of being in control. He was scarily focused. No emotions, no empathy, like a robot. It’s a pretty extraordinary thing. I call it “a perfect storm creating perfect monsters” because you have to have a lot of ingredients to create a person like him and you know, terrorism is mirror of societal change in most cases. I would call him “a high breed version”, because he was a high breed of partially national socialist and partially counter jihads, you know the ideology which bases around Vienna Doctrine. He’s not sort of a traditional Nazi. He’s becoming high breed ideology, it’s almost like a mirror image of Al-Qaeda, he was very much inspired by their methods, he learned from Al-Qaeda, he learned from Iraq, how they executed hostages, he learned from the Mumbai attack, he learned from Chechnya. All this stuff quite into the mix. He is like a mirror image of all that, obviously different in some sort.

I think for court is a good thing to be as transparent as possible, because on the one hand it gets closer in explanation to the family and others, more inside into his thinking. But on the other hand it’s good they didn’t show it on TV, because in a greater way people may find it too fascinating, too disturbing as well, because he really can handle himself in court in terms of not only being defensive, but being offensive, being in charge. I think that was a good judgment.
