A white woman from suburban Philadelphia who became a Muslim jihadist and has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to murder a Swedish cartoonist under the codename "Jihad Jane" has revealed that she was drawn to Islam because it gave her a sense of belonging after a troubled childhood in which she was raped over many years by her biological father.

Reuters' interviews with LaRose, her sister Pam and a counselor who helped Colleen when she was 17, give an insight into the terrible events in her childhood that left her so vulnerable to emotional exploitation. At the age of about seven or eight she was raped by her biological father, Richard LaRose, who continued to sexually abuse her until she ran away from home in Detroit, Michigan, when she was 13.

She took to living on the streets and working as a prostitute, and fell into addiction to heroin and cocaine. When the counselor, Ollie Mannino, telephoned the father, he admitted with no remorse: "Yeah, I raped her." He was never prosecuted for the crimes and died in 2010.

LaRose, who faces possible life in prison, said the abuse of her father had destroyed her life. "I have done all kinds of bad things. I was rebelling because of what he did and because my mother did nothing to help us."

AN Algerian-born Irish citizen, who is wanted in the US on terrorism charges, planned for a group to train in explosives with al-Qa'ida in order to support terrorist attacks against US and European citizens, a court has heard.

Ali Charaf Damache (48), who has been living in Ireland for a decade, is wanted in the US to face charges relating to the conspiracy to provide material support for terrorists and attempted identity theft to facilitate an act of international terrorism.

If convicted, Mr Damache faces a potential sentence of 45 years in prison.

Counsel for the State, Remy Farrell, opened extradition proceedings yesterday afternoon against Mr Damache at the High Court in Dublin.

JIHAD

He said the indictment, returned in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 2011, alleges that Mr Damache made contact over the internet with US woman Colleen LaRose – who used the online name 'Jihad Jane' – telling her he was a devout jihadist living in Ireland and was interested in travelling to Pakistan to fight against the US and others.

Mr Farrell said it is alleged Mr Damache planned for a small group to travel to an al-Qa'ida camp in Afghanistan, get training in explosives, and then return to Europe to support attacks on targets that would kill US and European citizens.

It is alleged Mr Damache, who went by the username 'the black flag', co-ordinated LaRose's departure from the US and her stay in the Netherlands and gave her spiritual guidance. She later flew to Ireland.

LaRose was arrested in October 2009, when she admitted her involvement in a plot to murder Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks.

The charges arose after Mr Damache was originally arrested in March 2010 as part of the investigation in to a large conspiracy to murder Lars Vilks.

A Colorado woman who married an Algerian terror suspect and helped support his jihadist training has been sentenced in Philadelphia to eight years in prison.

Jamie Paulin-Ramirez is getting a break after helping the FBI investigate her husband and others, including a Pennsylvania woman who called herself "Jihad Jane."

Paulin-Ramirez is sometimes referred to by the moniker "Jihad Jamie" because of her connection to the plot.

A defense lawyer says the Leadville woman had a troubled life before she fled to Ireland in 2009 to marry Ali Charaf Damache, whom she met online.

Damache is in custody in Ireland, fighting extradition.
