It's years since I watched the film, and I've only seen it once, because I found it a bit corny. Anyway, I imagine that the reason the Japanese officer started crying before calling off the automatic fire, is down to him seeing these old style Samurai still fighting the old way and laying down their lives and embracing death with that spirit of Bushido that the Samurai were known for. He, the Japanese officer knows that the rebel Samurai are doomed. That in a technological age they are anachronisms. Men who are out of their time. He knows this, and that kitanas and bows and arrows are no match for rifles, artillery and gatling guns, but in his soul, he admires their courage and, for my opinion I believe that the officer is at that moment in mourning for what he knows is the end of a way of life that spanned many centuries. Also, I feel that he would rather be with them than against them."
